  3. Trials have begun in Corpus Christi Texas over voter ID laws that prevent over 700,000 voters from participating in the election. The rule requires a government-issued photo ID and without all the right seven forms of the proper ID over half of the Texas population will not be able to vote. A large proportion of the people that will be unable to participate in voting are Latino and black. The Obama administration is arguing that this statute violates the polarizing law. Minority rights groups and democratic law makers make up a part of the group that is fighting these rules formed by the republican legislature.
This situation relates to our unit of reconstruction in the way of the voting restrictions put in place to prevent African Americans from voting. After the 15th amendment was created, the southerners tried to limit the black’s ability to vote as much as possible. The literacy test was enacted so that only educated African American could vote, and most were not educated at all. The poll tax was another rule used to stop blacks from voting. Because of the fee placed on voting, most could not afford to vote. This is very similar to what is happening in Texas because new rules are being created that stop most of the Latino and black population from being able to vote.

  4. People are becoming more conscious about the environment, so people hoping to go into jobs supporting the public have to appeal to public interest. In the article I read, titled Environment is Grabbing Big Roles in Ads for political Campaigns, the author talked about how many politicians have recently been incorporating the environment and their support of a better future for the next generation. Another article I read was entitled Homeowners go Solar to Save Environment and Money, talked about how people are starting to conserve energy in their own back yards. It says that things as small as installing solar panels can help conserve resources for future generations. The article also states that some solar systems can cover all of a household’s electricity needs. The new technologies of our time are helping us to save the environment, not only on a large scale, but also in small ways. Statistics show that quite a few homeowners are deciding to switch to renewable energy sources. The last article I read was titled Mobile Bay-keeper gives environmental protection award to Mayor Stimpson. It talked about how the mayor had been making efforts to clean up the bay area as well as other waterways in that region of Alabama. Mayor Stimpson said “This is a great time to be in this region and the environment is a crucial part of it.”
These articles all relate to our Progressive unit, and specifically to Theodore Roosevelt, who had a passion for the environment. He made many efforts to conserve natural landmarks and resources, in much the same way as the people in these articles.

Abortion has always been a sensitive topic in America. Should women be allowed to have one is the question that Colorado will answer this November. Colorado's 67th amendment, called the Personhood amendment, will ban abortion for all women and for all situations if passed. This has sparked a lot of controversy, mostly with women. Women not only in Colorado, but also from all over America are forming organizations in effort to stop this bill from being passed. One women’s rights group has set up a donation page that has already raised over $25,000 out of their $40,000 goal for their campaign. Dolores Huerta has gained attention for her actions fighting for women’s reproductive rights. Most of the reason women do not want this bill passed is because it lessens women’s control of their own pregnancy. In some women’s situations or positions, they believe that abortion is the best option. Pregnancy through rape, or financially unstableness are examples of these situations. This amendment has been attempted to be passed before but has been vetoed. Like the other attempts, it is highly unlikely that it will win the majority of the vote. In order to gain support for the veto of this amendment, these organizations have made films, websites etc.

This connects to our current unit, which goes into detail of how women over a hundred years ago banned together and fought for their rights. Women like Alice Paul and Lucy Burns worked together and along with many other women, formed organizations to campaign for their cause. By doing this, the 19th amendment was passed and they were given the right to vote. Very similarly, these women will most likely stop the Personhood amendment, which will ban abortion, and secure the rights they are determinedly fighting for.

These three articles are about Kurdish women fighting the Islamic State in the Middle East. These women are on the front lines, doing the shooting and killing. Most of these women had to leave their homes and jobs to fight for what they believe in. One woman even states that she lost all of her friends when she left her home to join the army. The women fighters have been essential in the battle against ISIS, and have helped the Kurdish armies win many battles. When a battle is almost lost, some women are tasked with suicide missions in which they run up to enemy lines with bombs strapped to their chests. It may sound brutal, but they believe that it is what must happen to defend their homeland and ideals.

These articles relate to the progressive era that we learned about in class. More specifically, it relates to women's sufferage and women's rights. In the progressive era, women fought for their rights and equality. They wanted to be seen as equals to men. Women weren't seen fit to have jobs that men had, including work in politics, business, and the military. This article shows how society has progressed and how equal rights have been achieved more for women. The most suprising part of this article is that the women gaining more equal rights are from the middle-east, where women are more commonly treated as possesions than as people. Most of these women are part of the Kurdistan Workers Party of Turkey, which is a political party fighting for Kurdish independence and women's rights. That party can be related to the NWSA and other groups that fought for women's rights.

  7. People in the United States are finally coming together to support gay rights, or same-sex marriages. Thirty two states have legalized gay marriage, leaving only 18 states with gay marriage banned. People are beginning to realize that people are being denied their rights. President Barrack Obama has started support gay marriage, by stating that he believes same-sex couples in all 50 states should be allowed to marry under the equal protection clause of the Constitution. Fifteen states have legalized gay marriage this year, which shows that more people are starting to get on the band wagon and give gay people their right to marry in this new 2014 mind set.

In 1918 president Woodrow Wilson gave a speech before congress in support of giving women the right to vote. Then in 1920 the 19th amendment was passed allowing women to vote in the United States. In Current events Obama is supporting gay marriage and more and more states are legalizing gay marriage. This shows that America is still trying to obtain equal rights for all its citizens. African Americans, Women, and now gay and lesbian citizens are obtaining rights that are equal to everyone else. Just like how almost everyone supported women and African Americans, most Americans accept gay rights and are helping take the steps needed to get them the rights they deserve.

The first two articles cover an issue we are all very aware of or have been recently at least. This issue is the terrorist group called ISIS. This group is a terrorist group known for committing mass murder and terroristic acts on civilians, then documenting and publishing videos of their work. Recently (as mentioned in the article) the United States has deployed 300 soldiers to control and hopefully eliminate ISIS. The third article covers an issue that was a big deal a little bit ago, which would be the issues with the Ukraine. When this situation was more heated, the United States sent 200 troops to demonstrate peacemaking exercises. In both situations it is apparent that the US is devoted to protecting democratic ideals all around the world not just domestically.
When McKinley was president during the progressive era, he faced very similar issues. In his presidency a group known as The Boxers terrorized parts of China, murdering and converting thousands of civilians. In order to neutralize this terroristic group, McKinley deployed and transported 2,500 US troops to china. Here it is observed that McKinley felt strong enough about the protection of peoples of all kinds, rights and lives. This devotion and concern is a true indicator of strong democratic ideals and the preservation of such.
