In baseball there is now a rule that states that each manager in a game can challenge up to 2 calls. If the manager gets the first call correct then he is allowed to challenge a second call. If the manager challenges a call and the umpire crew says that it’s incorrect, then the manager is limited to only that challenge because he was incorrect.
This new rule in the baseball era is connected to US History because for Americans, this new rule was very different than what they had been accustomed to for many years. Another huge change to the way of American society was the abolition of African Americans being under the rule of slavery and African Americans having basic rights. I can compare the baseball board meeting in the off season to discuss this rule to the North and the South meeting to discuss the Treaty of Paris. Nobody was expecting that this rule change was going to happen. This rule and slavery have much in common for many reasons. One reason is that both of the changes are better for the United States of America. I say this because both of the changes were radical and they were better than worse. Now Umpires won’t be able to blow super important calls like the White Sox vs. Indians game on June 2nd 2010. Armando Galarraga was pitching a perfect game until umpire Jim Joyce ruined it by calling a runner safe at 1st when he was out by 2 steps. If replay was available back then, Galarraga would have made history, instead he only got the win. Slavery was a radical change because it had all of the ex-Confederate soldiers and southerners upset with the Union or the North. It also changed the South by making cotton fields slave free so all of the cotton farm owners would have to pay people to pick cotton instead of slaves doing it for free. African Americans now had basic rights so they were treated fairly just like the baseball players.
Derek Jeter is one of the best baseball players to ever wear the Yankees blue pinstripes. For the past 20 years, Derek Jeter had over 3000 hits and had won multiple World Series Championships. Derek had many characteristics that made him a god person and a good baseball player. His nickname The Captain indicated that he was a very good leader for the New York Yankees Baseball team.
Someone who was a lot like him was Upton Sinclair. Upton was a Muckraker Journalist who wrote one of the most informational articles of American history called "The Jungle". The Jungle was about how meat packing factories had multiple health violations and sanitary issues. One part of his article was about how Rat pop would get on the meat and the employees would only wipe off the poop and start packing it away. In my own opinion, It was very gross and stupid how uneducated the Meat Packing employees were for doing this kind of action. Another part about the article was about how when the rats ate the poisoned bread crumbs and died, the employees would get the dead rats and throw them into the Hopper or the meat shredder. Meaning that rat meat would be inside of normal everyday sausage links. That is so gross. Soon after the article was published, the meat inspection act and the pure food and drug act were passed
I could compare Derek Jeter and Upton Sinclair in so may ways but 2 big reasons are that they are both heroes and they both started a new era. They are both heroes because Derek had led the Yankees to multiple World Series and Upton Sinclair wrote "The Jungle" that perhaps saved thousands of lives inside the US from meat related diseases. They also both started a new era by Derek creating more world series rings inside the clubhouse and Upton by making meat more safe to eat
ISIS is a terrorist group in the Middle East that rose from the civil war of Syria. Their goal is to make an Islamic state in the middle of Syria and Iraq. ISIS controls hundreds of square miles and has been taking over cities and towns in Syria and Iraq. They enforce sharia law in the places they control, influencing normal and religious aspects of life. Such laws include enforcing fast during Ramadan, brutal public murders or “justice”, and making women weir veils in public. The governments of the countries ISIS is confronting are weak and unloved, making them easy to take over. It has become the most dangerous terrorist group in the world. President Obama told the world his plans to help defeat ISIS, because they may pose a threat to us in the future. ISIS is just like the K.K.K. from the reconstruction era. They both took advantage of the chaos of the civil war and used it to gain power. They both used public executions to arise fear in the people. The K.K.K. used lynching while ISIS uses beheading, and just general murder. They both struck fear into people so they could have power and do what they want. ISIS controls part of the Middle East, but the K.K.K. had control of the south. They had support from the white southerners and controlled the African Americans. ISIS gets support from the Sunni Muslims, so they can take over the Middle East. ISIS and the K.K.K. are very much alike.
Reconstruction was a time of racial separation and political turmoil. Segregation became a way of life, and whites maintained their superiority over black people. The state of homeless people in Hawaii is somewhat similar to the plight of the African Americans during Reconstruction. The Hawaii tourist board is pushing to get Hawaii’s homeless away from large tourist meccas. They are afraid that visitors will not come back for vacation if they see the homeless on the streets. During Reconstruction, white business owners wouldn’t allow black people anywhere near their stores for fear that their white customers would not come back. The state forced African Americans to use separate facilities and services, driving them away rather than helping them. It seems Hawaii is trying to do the same. In other news, the popular British television show, Doctor Who, has brought a new actor into the show’s lead role. Peter Capaldi, the new actor, is stepping into the previous actor’s shoes, much like President Johnson after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In this science fiction show, the main character, known simply as the Doctor, is a Time Lord from Gallifrey. Whenever he is on the brink of death, the Doctor has the ability to renew himself and change form. This process is called regeneration. The finale of season seven saw the 11th Doctor die, and regenerate into Capaldi. While Abraham Lincoln couldn’t regenerate, he did choose a second in command for just such an emergency. When he was assassinated at Ford’s Theater, Lincoln’s vice president Andrew Johnson took his place, and continued Lincoln’s work to lead the country through Reconstruction. The principal of a school in California has refused a generous offer from Chick-Fil-a that would have helped earn money for the football team, since there is no fee for the players. The principal turned up her nose at the offer simply because she does not agree with Chick-fil-a’s stance on a Biblically based family. She would rather not have the money than have it from them. This is much like the situation during Reconstruction. White people would rather not have business than have black customers, even though their business meant money. This principle seems to think along a similar line. ~Mia
ISIS Kills Another Hostage David Haines – British PM vows to bring militants to justice In Syria, the Islamic state ISIS released another video of the beheading of a British hostage and aid worker. Last week, 44 year old David Haines was brutally murdered at the hands of ISIL (ISIS) by a ISIS militant dressed in a black hooded costume with his face covered. Haines was kidnapped last year while working for the French agency ACTED in Syria. This execution followed the execution of two American journalists. Prime Minister David Cameron said in an address to the British people, "They boast of their brutality; they claim to do this in the name of Islam. That is nonsense. Islam is a religion of peace”. The British PM also stated that, "We will hunt down those responsible and bring them to justice no matter how long it takes". Bringing this militant group to justice cannot be done alone. The British will work closely with their allies, not just the United States and in Europe, but also in the region because this organization poses a massive threat to the entire Middle East. This relates to the Reconstruction period when the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) played a violent role against African Americans in the South. During this time there was widespread racism and hatred for freed African Americans. The Klan displayed acts of violence and murder against innocent people. Just like the ISIS militants, the Klan also dressed in costumes of white robes, masks, and conical hats. The costumes seem to be designed to scare people and to hide their identities. Just like how many groups durng the reconstruction period had power like The White Leauge and congress there is one person that had power that people will always remember. This person is Joan Rivers. I could have put her under many catagories, but I put her under who was the power since she did have power over the minds of her fans. Everyone who loved her and all her fans will always remember her and carry out her plans like most people did during the reconstruction period. She is well known in fashion and styling industry from her shows that she has preformed. Joan was obviously well known if at her death she had Ryan Seacrest, David Steinberg, and Tyler Oakley. She had her fans laughing, even if her jokes were harsh. This is like how some whites acted to the blacks, unknowing of the harm they caused them. This caused some people to dislike her and not want to be with her, but her true fans stayed with her. Also, she had many choices in her life, one of these was the surgery in which was maybe her cause of death, just like how through all of the reconstruction period every white person had a choice to accept blacks or not. Also, Joan has made so many quotes and sayings of how to cheer people up and also either set or change the minds of people. Also, just like how the whites saw the blacks in their places and how word spread fast, so was Joans death, but with less hatred and more sorrow. ~Derek
The first primary source document is a photograph of Carnegie Hall in 1890. This photo was taken before the hall officially opened in 1891. From this document, the incredible details of the majestic structure become apparent. For one thing, the ceiling and walls are covered in ornate patterns and shapes. From the curvature of the ceiling to the placement of the chairs and the aisles, everything is orderly, clean, polished and symmetrical. The room that the photo is depicting has large windows, balconies and a huge, intricate chandelier. The stage is vast, and the organ pipes take up a majority of the space. This photo shows Carnegie Hall in it’s youth when it was one of the most new and beautiful buildings in America. The second document is a letter from Andrew Carnegie himself (the man who funded & decided upon the building of Carnegie Hall) to Hiram Hitchcock (1889). Hitchcock was the owner of the 5th Avenue Hotel, and one who was involved in the construction of Madison Square Garden. The letter was to negotiate Hitchcock’s land-finding involvement in the project. Carnegie tells Hitchcock that he must find a good place for the hall to be built (within specific boundaries) by the time that Carnegie returns from his trip to the South, or else their partnership will be over.
These documents show that the wealthy people (Andrew Carnegie for example) had the power in this era. Carnegie was able to invest millions of dollars into the building of Carnegie Hall. The hall was a place where other wealthy people could come together, socialize and listen to music played by famous musicians and composers. These documents stress the control of the upperclass in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Andrew Carnegie also had the power to become successful and famous without doing much work himself. He could take trips to the South and leave it up to others to handle issues while he was away. Much like during the Homestead Steel Mill strike when he went to Scotland and let Frick handle the multiplying problems alone. The wealthy people in this era controlled everything, and had the ability to stand by while the lower class did all the work. You can see how this favor of the higher class could become a problem in future eras.

As stated by Carlynne McDonnell, this unfair treatment of women “crosses every geographic boundary, age, race, religion, political affiliation, education level and profession. It can be found in the healthcare sector, judicial system, welfare system, in every occupation and industry, at colleges and universities, in the entertainment sector, in sports, in the media and in our military.” Gender inequality has always been a problem, but only in recent years has the problem arisen to the media and the public. Pantene has done a commercial showing gender bias and how it exists in the modern world and another commercial about female empowerment. A group called FCKH8 has recently made a video titled “F-Bombs for Feminism”, meant to bring awareness about gender inequality and feminism. Also, Emma Watson has made a speech to the United Nations about gender equality and the “heforshe” campaign. These along with the work of other women’s rights activists are exposing the unjust treatment of women in our world through speeches and the media. This reminds me of the muckrakers and how they used journalism to shed light on the living of the lower class. They exposed to the upper class the slums and the unsanitary spaces the poor took up as shelter. Also, the muckrakers exposed political corruption and wrote to advocate change, just as many people today are advocating change for gender equality.
